What is Membrane Distillation?
Membrane distillation (MD) is a type of membrane process whose driving force is temperature. In the membrane distillation system, hot and cold water flows are separated from each other with the help of microporous hydrophobic membranes. Based on this principle, it recovers water in very high purity by firstly steaming and then condensing it.
How Does the MD Membrane Work?
The hydrophobic membrane prevents the flow of liquid water from passing through the pores, while allowing water vapor to pass through. With the temperature difference, water vapor passes over the membrane and condenses on the cold surface. Then the vapor pressure difference occurs. Non-volatile components are not allowed to pass through the membrane, thus providing a very high purity distillate, unlike conventional distillation.
